The Swaipp project – Swedish AI Precision Pathology – is now rolling out AI-based precision pathology across several hospitals in the country, with breast cancer as the focus case. We interviewed Professor Johan Hartman about the current status. 

👉 Based on award-winning research from Karolinska Institutet, the project investigates how AI solutions can be effectively implemented, from researchers to patient benefit.

It is a cross-sector innovation environment for developing and implementing AI-based diagnostic decision support for cancer care.

The new methods being introduced now enable digital image analysis to extract more information from biopsies or surgical specimens than is normally possible in a clinical pathology lab. It is faster and cheaper than comparable methods, and it can contribute to more equitable cancer care where more people receive early diagnoses.

The project includes Karolinska Institutet, Stratipath, Microsoft Sweden, Roche Diagnostics Sweden, Philips, the Breast Cancer Association, Prevas AB (MEDQURE), Helseplan Consulting Group AB, Region Kalmar County, Region Västmanland, and Region Skåne. The project is funded by Vinnova and Swelife as well as the project’s partners.

The researchers behind Stratipath, Mattias Rantalainen and Johan Hartman, were awarded the Athena Prize 2022 and KI’s prize for innovation and utility creation in 2023.
